Logo for the Mara Raptor Project

From time to time I get asked to design a logo for an event or organization. I enjoy these opportunities because it allows me take a break from guidebook illustration and exercise more freeform creativity. I recently finished a logo for the Mara Raptor Project, a great organization that focuses on research and conservation of raptors in the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The flagship species for this organization is the Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), an excellent booted eagle (Subfamily: Accipitrinae) that breeds across much of Africa. The logo I created features a bust of an adult of this striking species.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game 2019 Conservation Stamp Featuring The Golden Eagle – Aquila chrysaetos

Support the conservation of Alaska’s wildlife through the purchase of the 2019 Alaska Department of Fish & Game Conservation Stamp!

I had the pleasure of creating this years conservation stamp, highlighting one of Alaska’s most important avian predators, the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). Biologists with ADF&G, such as Travis Booms, are currently working on research that aims to learn more about Alaska’s eagle populations and the threats they face, to ensure that this captivating species remains a fixture of Alaska’s wilderness.

An Illustration of a Few of the Larger Eagles (Family: Accipitridae)

I appreciate commissions because they provide the opportunity to paint something that I likely wouldn’t otherwise. The above painting of eagle heads is a great example. I have always enjoyed illustrating raptor heads floating alone, but I’ve never tried painting multiple on one canvas. My friend Mike Lanzone reached out to me to make a request for an eagle painting, so I was pushed to put together the concept and paint multiple birds in one place. It was a challenge for sure, but quite rewarding in the end.

Mike wanted the painting to gift to his wife Tricia Miller. Mike and Tricia are excellent biologists that work with many of the species in the painting. Mike is the CEO of Cellular Tracking Technologies, an awesome company that outfits wildlife researchers with the technology necessary to study movement ecology. Tricia is the Executive Director at Conservation Science Global Inc. Needless to say, they’re quite the power couple and I really look up to them. Among many great research projects, they are integral in Project Snowstorm, a research project aimed at understanding irruption and interannual movements of Snowy Owls. I’m honored to provide them with an illustration for their home that will help capture and celebrate the great work that they do.

Black Hawk Eagle Painting for Belize Raptor Center

My friend Aron came to me recently to ask for a favor; an illustration for a silent auction to benefit a small raptor education center in Belize. The Belize Raptor Center is an organization whose primary focus is to showcase indigenous Belizean species as the most ecologically and economically important class of wildlife in the country.

The benefit will be held in Salt Lake City on 8 October at Church and State from 7-10 PM. There will be a silent auction, live music, and best of all live birds. If you’re in Salt Lake City, be there.

Here are a few details about the Belize Raptor Center from their website:

MISSON: Educate and inspire conservation of birds of prey and their habitat, using permitted non releasable raptors. Rescue and rehabilitate injured and orphaned birds of prey.

SUMMARY: Our mission is important because in Belize, raptors are highly persecuted due to the many myths and misconceptions that surround them. Although they are protected in the United States, the vast majority of them migrate south for the winter and face dangers such as shooting, poisoning, and habitat loss…. Only though proper education can we hope to protect them.

GOAL: We are planning to construct a brand new facility that will serve as the Visitor Center for Belize Raptor Center. Currently the center houses 6 birds of prey that are taken off-site to educate schoolchildren about the importance of raptor conservation. There will be a museum and education center as well as an indoor flight space for a free-flighted bird show – the first of its kind in Belize.

THE FACILITY: The funding will go towards the costs of labor and materials for the Visitor Center. The entire establishment is completely off-grid; solar power and rain/well water keep expenses low. Income from the gift shop and paid programs will help keep our facility self sustaining after the initial costs of building the visitor center.
