Harpy Eagle Painting for the Journal of Raptor Research

FullSizeRenderI’m honored and thankful for the opportunity to have painted the cover art for issue 1 of the 50th anniversary of the RRF’s Journal of Raptor Research. The issue features an article from The Peregrine Fund’s Harpy Eagle work, along with an article detailing a friend’s master’s work on Burrowing Owls, an excellent article on Gyrfalcon movement’s, and a lot more. I’m so happy for the opportunity to add to an organization that does such incredible work and carries the tradition of raptor studies forward.

Notes on Gyrfalcon Molt

I like to pay attention to molt in birds. There are many aspects of a birds life history that can be reflected by their strategy for feather replacement. A great example is something I’ve been watching with the nesting Gyrfalcons I’ve been working with lately.

Last summer, I noticed something about the molt between male and female Gyrfalcons. While I was entering nests to install cameras in the early nesting period (mostly during incubation), I noticed that males were behind females in their molt progression. Following my initial observation, I started paying closer attention to each bird. I continue to take notes on this, and wanted to share the molt of a pair from a nest I visited recently.

You can see that the male (photo 1) has just dropped his fifth primary. Falcons generally begin their primary molt at P 4&5 and progress in two directions. The female (photo 2) has dropped her third, fourth, fifth, and sixth primaries. You can see P 4&5 are growing in already.

This illustrates a few simple things in the life of a Gyrfalcon. One, that energetics govern the ability to molt. Two, that male and female Gyrfalcons have different energetic roles and energy budgets during incubation and early brood rearing. They have different roles in the process. These are illustrated by the fact that they differ in the progression of their molt.

Later, the rates even out as both adults need to provision for their growing brood. I hope to get photos of this pair on my next visit to the nest in a few weeks.

Gyrfalcon Project Update

Here in western Alaska the bulk of the breeding Gyrfalcons are fledging young at the moment. We were able to install all ten cameras in nests this summer, and starting tomorrow will begin taking them out of the finished nests. I’ve been extremely pleased with the quality of the images that these cameras take. I’ll be spending all winter sorting through the photos to identify prey items brought to the nest. This will be a long process, as I should have somewhere around 1.2 million photos to look through. Quite an undertaking, but I’m excited to start the task.

It’s been a tough season to this point, full of challenges and some failures, but I’m happy with the success we’ve had to this point. Getting all ten cameras placed was a goal of mine, and I’m happy to have that success. For my first year, and the first year of the project, it has gone well. Above all it has been nothing short of an education. There are certainly fruits in difficulties, mistakes, and failures. Next year, I’ll have some experience to draw upon to increase the success and further the project goals.

 

 

Using Nest Cameras to Monitor Gyrfalcon Diet

While I’ve been sharing images and stories from Alaska concerning my work with Gyrfalcons, I’ve neglected to share any aspect of the work that has brought me here. I chose the image above to provide insight into the idea behind The Gyrfalcon Project. In the past month, Neil Paprocki and I have installed 6 motion sensor cameras in Gyrfalcon nests to monitor their diet during the nestling period. This information will give us a better idea of how changes in the system will impact the ability of these birds to reproduce. 6 cameras is a good start for the project, but I am capable of outfitting four more nests with cameras this season. The issue is access, and at the moment I’m scrambling to formulate a plan to put out the final four and round out the season with ten total cameras gathering valuable data of nesting Gyrfalcons. I’ll keep interested readers updated regarding our success. Please feel free to comment about questions, ideas, concerns, or general queries. I’ll do my best to respond when I’m able.  And the Gyrfalcon beat goes on!
